There were some rumblings on Saturday that the New York Knicks may consider sending rookie Danilo Gallinari to the D-League for a "rehab assignment" before returning to his pro team once his back injury has healed. Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni called that notion "a little over the top" this weekend, but I'm wondering why it's so crazy.
In Major League Baseball teams send their rehabilitating players through the minors to get back in the swing of things all the time and have pretty effective results. Why shouldn't NBA teams do the same, especially for rookies who could use the gentle ushering back into the full-speed tempo of the Big League?
Gallinari has to heal before we see the end of this debate, but at the very least it's an intriguing idea for the future. I'll be curious to see if that's a trend that will catch on.
